Mankowski is an Active Spot!

In these pictures, two teams of residents and staff battle one another in our annual shuffleboard tournament. (Winners names are engraved on the base of the cut-glass trophy celebrating Winifred Stuart Mankowski Day.) The tournament is followed by one of our famous patio barbeques. Also, we decorate the Christmas tree together, along with enjoying Christmas music and hot spiced cider. Monthly game night has bingo or bridge.

Daily walking is necessary to get mail, go to the free laundry, to connect with the Mankowski vans or get your own car. Residents volunteer at local charities, are active in local politics, and contribute to the local newspaper. And for fun, there are many hiking paths in the foothills which form the back-drop for Mankowski Homes.

Frequent concerts or professional entertainment occur in our activity room, which is graced by a 1931 Steinway walnut grand piano. A large screen TV, with cable programming, is available every day, and we have a weekly current movie, with popcorn and soft drink.

More than half of Mankowski residents have their own cars, but all are welcome to use the van transportation offered. Vans take residents to local church services and meetings, grocery stores, banks and post offices, libraries and shopping malls. We have two vans for this purpose. Residents with individual needs (from hair appointments to tests at the California Department of Motor Vehicles) can make arrangements to be driven to these appointments. If staff is not available to drive the resident, a taxi can be used with Mankowski reimbursing the resident for the taxi cost.

At least once a month, staff invites residents to a lecture or concert, out to lunch, or to a special activity such as a concert at the Hollywood Bowl, or a day at Laguna Beach. Game night is an evening with the manager for games of choice and refreshments.

Special van trips go frequently to museum displays - from Ben Franklin to Van Gogh. Nearby are the Norton Simon Museum, Huntington Library and Gardens, the Getty Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Arts among others. Also nearby are Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Universal Studios and other entertainment activities.

Two colleges are located on Citrus Avenue. Citrus Community College offers many academic classes, and music, choir, dancing, golf, swimming, and tennis. Some residents and staff take undergraduate or graduate courses at Azusa Pacific University. And both schools provide cultural concerts and plays at reasonable prices.

Mankowski Homes treats residents to Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and parties. Our grounds and common areas are decorated beautifully. We also visit some of the nearby neighborhoods and enjoy refreshments and Christmas music.

Mankowski is located in Los Angeles County about 12 miles east of Pasadena. We have a good freeway system to get us around by car. And, the electric, silent train line from Los Angeles to San Bernardino is under construction. The Azusa-Citrus station, about three blocks north of Mankowski Homes, is expected to be completed within a couple of years.

There are more activities, but it’s good to remember that you pick and choose which activities fit your preference and your schedule.
